I autocrossed then autocrossed and crewed for a local guy for a few races and learned a little more from the track scene and then went road racing. I can tell you from personal experience that autocross training Will be of great benefit to you. When you go to a track day you may get an incredible instructor to help teach you the ropes, but you may also get someone who is a lousy instructor who is just there to get free track time with his race car. I can also tell you that what you learn autocrossing can be applied to car control when you are accidentally flirting with the edge of out of control when out on a real race track. There are differences in the two but developing skills autocrossing will pay dividends when you finally go to a track day at a road course. At the very least it can save you a boat load of money in the event of a mistake while at speed on track. No matter what route anyone takes I would recommend a track day. It's one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life. After my first track day I was immediately in the back of sportscar magazine looking for a racecar and at a competition driving school and racing the next season. It's addictive.

I totally agree with you (just not Lon ) ... all's I'm saying is it's not necessary to get "trained" to go to a track day on a road course. The "newbie" group is just that, and they usually take it pretty easy out there. I do plan to autox this season myself, and I'm sure it will make me all that much better and safer on the road courses.

I've done one autocross event in my car when it was bone stock about a year or two ago. I also drive on a really twisty road 3 nights of the week at around midnight (I work 2nd shift and get off at midnight). I learn more and more every night just by driving a tad over the speed limit and I get a feel more for the car. The speed limit is 35 and I usually do around 40-50 on it.

I'm buying new tires with my tax refund and I'm currently trying to decide between:

Know a friend that works at Tire Discounters
- OEM size KDW2's on stock wheels
750.00 including tax
+ Free alignment & balancing anytime from any tire discounters
+ Nitrogen inflation
+ Road Hazard, free tire with any hazard that occurs

Members from SRTForums
+ Lighter 16 inch ACR BBS wheels
+ Wider KDW tires
+ usually selling between 600-800 dollars with wheels and tires
- (obviously no free alignment, balancing, road hazard, nitrogen inflation)
- used (most have less than 1,000 miles on them)
- might have to drive over 2 hours to pick them up

Here's my .02

Try to get a 17x7.5 rim (35-38mm offset) and a 225/45/17 tire (Kumho or Falken are the best bang for the $$). I've seen new packages in the $700 range for that size rim and Falken 615's.

The 16's from the ACR are nice and will definantly work well, but I just don't like the looks of the smaller diameter rim.

DON'T get the stock size! WIDER is better!

Well, I'm extremely picky for the wheels I want. (ACR BBS wheels for daily driving and SSR comps for Summer/Track is my plan really...)

I want to get new wheels and tires, except I really only have 700-800 dollars to spend all together. That is why the ACR wheels with tires are a great deal to me because they come with extremely good tires. Any new wheels I get will be 16 inch wheels and be as wider for sure.

I'm just really concerned that whatever tire I do buy will suck or be less quality than the KDW2's. I'm not worried about spending money on the actual tires themselves as long as they are the best.

The SSR in a 17x7.5 is about the best setup anyone could hope for (including me), but as you and BlueFlamer know ... holy crap are they expensive!

Good luck in your search.

Yeah.. you can't really get any better than SSR comps other than volks.. which are my second choice.

Thanks
